Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

 

 

How do I enroll in classes to work toward my high-school equivalency?

  • Call (617) 268-1912 to schedule your placement tests (1 reading, 2 math, 1 writing).

  • Call to receive scores and make an appointment for interview.  Important: Scores will be discussed only with the potential student.

  • Complete the interview and necessary paperwork.

  • Attend orientation and registration.

 

What will my schedule be?

  • The day and time of your class depends on the class level to which you are assigned.  Most ABE and HiSET classes meet four days (or evenings) a week for two hours each session.   We will not admit students who cannot attend the full class schedule. See a sample schedule.  

 

What is the cost?

  • There is no charge for ABE and HiSET classes.

 

When can I start class?

  • Students typically start class in September or January, but we also start new students in November or March if a space is available. 

 

How long will it take me to complete the HiSET?

  • That all depends on your skills, your dedication (attendance), and how much time and energy (class participation and homework) you put toward your education. 

  • ABE and HiSET have four levels of classes If you enter our program at level  4, it should take you less time to obtain your high- school equivalency than those who enter at a lower level. 

 

What are the requirements for being in the program? 

  • Attendance, attendance, attendance!  A good attitude, effort, and participation are also very important. Successful students in our program also have some of the follow characteristics: 

  • Motivation to learn and to set and meet goals

  • A desire for independence and a better life

  • Willingness to work collaboratively with staff other students

 

What is the minimum age for attending your program? 

  • We do accept some students at age 16; however, if you are under 18, we will do an extensive evaluation and screening to guarantee that this program can meet your needs.  The average age of our students is between 25–30 years old; there is no upper- age limit. 

 

Do you offer the HiSET test at NDEC? 

  • No.  If you need information about taking the test, please see the HiSET webpage.
