skills, and citizenship. NDEC \'s services also include a tutoring center where students receive academic support from caring and experienced individuals. SND, Notre Dame Education Center \'s Case Manager. As Case Manager, Sr. Jane is dedicated to supporting students as they struggle to balance their lives, families, work and school. Sr. Jane \'s primary responsibilites include: Addressing problems interfering with students attending school Acting as a resource for housingstudents with VISA, asylum, and resettlement issues Accompanying students to appointments to serve as an advocate For further information, please contact: Sr. Jane at 617-268-1912 Ext. 223. Since 1995, Sr. Margaret McLaughlin MFIC, has served the students of NDEC as Job Counselor. Many of the students at NDEC are highly educated professionals who can not practice their profession or trade in this country before receiving more education. Sr. Margaret dedicates her time helping students: Assess interests, skills, education and previous work experience Find out about educational and training programs, grants and financial aid Prepare for job interviews and resumes Understand information on worker \'s rights, wages, benefits and filing income taxes Locate job openings from daily and weekly newspapers Record employment data, job search and job placement or training For further information, please contact: Sr. Margaret at 617-268-1912 Ext. 222. Tutoring Services NDEC \'s tutoring center was dedicated in memory of Darryln Danahy , a faithful volunteer of many years who died in October, 2000 after battling cancer. Darryln was first approached to serve on the NDEC Board, but she requested instead to do direct service work with our students. From the Spring of 1996 through June 2000, Darryln drew her students into the world of American culture with compassion and creativity. She was concerned at first that she did not have the skills necessary for the task of teaching English. She soon discovered that she was eminently qualified as a wife, a mother, and a teacher who had many things in common with her students, who were struggling to master the English language and the American culture. In this same spirit, volunteers from Boston and its surrounding cities and towns share their time and talent with students at NDEC as individual tutors. Many of the students contribute their educational successes to the support and guidance they receive from their tutors. These students face the difficult challenge of juggling jobs, family obligations, school and English as their second language. The one-on-one tutoring affords them the flexibility of extra study time and the individual pace they need to be successful learners. You can learn more about gift of time opportunities at the Darrlyn Danahy Center by visiting our Volunteer Program page. All students are accepted regardless of language ability. The program also offers the option of Citizenship preparation and computer classes. Basic 1 ESOL provides Beginning level students with the most important vocabulary, grammar and functional expressions needed to communicate in English at a basic level. Instruction is presented in a realistic context through every day life situations. Basic 2 ESOL is a continuation of Basic I, incorporating more in depth verbal communication skills and vocabulary development. Like Basic I, instruction is based on real life situations with plenty of practice in oral communication. Basic 3 ESOL offers Intermediate level students expanded vocabulary development, more complex grammar skills and a wider choice of functional expressions. Students are given many opportunities to practice oral communication with each other using the English language. Advanced ESOL builds on skills developed in Intermediate classes. Emphasis is given to complex grammar structures, vocabulary development within the context of selected readings, and improving writing skills. Citizenship classes are offered to students who are in the process of Naturalization. The program includes preparation in the basics of US History, the role of the US government, responsibilities of US citizens and writing practice from dictation. The Notre Dame Education Center is A Place of Hope. Students who attend NDEC, participate i n the in the development of the Center as a place where family values are strengthened, community building fostered and diversity respected and celebrated. In setting the direction of the Center, participants will use a form of critical social analysis as their tool for understanding the complexities of the world and responding to them. Therefore, the programs offered and the style of learning will provide for reflection on the individual and collective experience of the students and teachers. In 1860, seven Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur arrived at 50 West Broadway in South Boston. The founding Sisters went out and rang a bell telling everyone that a new school, a free school, would open in September. Twelve hundred students showed! The Sisters taught morning, afternoon and evening classes. Since then, the Sisters have continued their educational mission in the city and in 1992, when Cardinal Cushing High School in South Boston closed its doors, the Sisters chose to establish a comprehensive adult educational center now known as “NDEC” or Notre Dame Education Center. The Center continues to provide instruction to adults during the morning, afternoon and evening. Today, at NDEC, immigrants who come from all over the world and other adult learners have the opportunity to rebuild their lives as they develop confidence in their ability to communicate in English and further their education.
